Steel worker killed in accident at Indiana Harbor facility


A Schererville man has died from injuries sustained in a Sept. 15 workplace accident at a steel mill in East Chicago.

Michael Osika, of the 700 block off Moraine Street, died Saturday at the University of Chicago Medical Center as a result of his injuries from the accident at the Cleveland-Cliffs Indiana Harbor facility, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. He was 44.

Details have not yet been released, but in a statement, Cleveland-Cliffs spokeswoman Patricia Persico said that “a serious accident occurred while an employee was performing a routine job in the ladle maintenance area on Thursday, Sept. 15.” She declined to release other personal details.

“Cleveland-Cliffs extends its deepest condolences to the employee’s family and the company will provide much needed support to the family during this difficult time,” Persico said in the statement.

Mike Millsap, director of United Steelworkers Union District 7, did not respond.
