Former Asian medalist Sumit Sangwan (86 kg) was among the opening day winners of the men’s national boxing championships at the Inspire Institute of Sports on Wednesday. Pugilist Haryana Sumit, who competed in the London 2012 Olympics, clinched a comfortable victory over Harish Prasadula of Andhra Pradesh unanimously in the opener of the 86kg. 2019 President’s Cup gold medalist Neeraj Swami (48kg) also put on an impressive show and got off to a victorious start with a dominant 5-0 victory over Sagar from Haryana.

Rajpinder Singh of Punjab also beat opponent Rahul Niltu of Himachal Pradesh to secure a 5-0 victory in a 54kg fight. Other boxers who made impressive starts included Nikhil Dubey of Maharashtra and Dinesh Kumar of Chhattisgarh.

Competing in the 75 kg category, the two boxers achieved contrasting victories. While Nikhil won by stoppage in the first round over Sejad Lilgar of Gujarat, Dinesh had to work hard against Abhishek Shaw of Bengal in his narrow 3-2 victory.

The tournament takes place in the 13 new categories announced by the International Boxing Association. The finals of the current championships will take place on September 21.

The gold medalists will reserve a direct seat for the next world championships scheduled for Belgrade, Serbia, from October 24 to November 6.

Gold and silver medalist boxers will earn direct entries into the national coaching camp. The national championships will be followed by selection trials until September 24 to finalize the two remaining names to participate in the national camp of each category.

In the selection trials, two bronze medalists from the national championships will face boxers representing the second top-3 teams from the 2019 national championships – SSCB (Services), RSPB (Chemin de fer) and Haryana.

The announcement of the full list of campers will be made on September 24, based on the results of the selection rounds.
