Jato Dynamics Says Manufacturers Prepare To Launch At Least 10 More SUVs This Year
According to data released by Jato Dynamics India, provider of automotive information and analysis, SUVs accounted for around 34% of total passenger vehicle sales in the first quarter of calendar year 2021. Data provided by Jato India, which measured the sales contribution by vehicle body type, showed that sedans continued to dominate the pack, accounting for nearly 42 percent of total sales. Sedans and minivans, on the other hand, contributed 12% each to total passenger vehicle sales in the first quarter of 2021.

Jato Dynamics India also said that Indian automakers are preparing to launch at least 10 additional SUVs this year, to meet the growing appetite for SUV body style. Some of the upcoming models expected to go on sale in India this year include Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun, Tiguan facelift (5-seater), Hyundai Alazar, Mahindra XUV700 and next-gen Scorpio, among others. In fact, Kia India is also working on a new SUV for India, which is expected to be the 7-seater version of the Seltos, but that won’t be available until early 2022.

Between January and March 2021, total sales of commercial vehicles amounted to 383,643 units. However, this also includes people carriers. That said, the top 5 SUVs sold in the same time frame included the Hyundai Creta (37352), Venue (33725), Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza (33483), Kia Seltos (28731) and Sonet (25354). The Creta, Venue and Vitara Brezza were also among the top 10 cars sold in fiscal year 2020-2021.
