The Biden administration said on Friday it would start restricting travel to the United States from India, where a devastating coronavirus outbreak kills more than 3,000 every day.
Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, said in a statement that the move was made on the advice of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and would come into effect on Tuesday.
“The policy will be implemented in light of the extraordinarily high number of Covid-19 cases and the multiple variants circulating in India,” she said.
Doctors and news reports cited anecdotal – but inconclusive – evidence suggesting that a local variant called B.1.617 is behind the outbreak in the country. But the researchers say the data so far suggests that another variant that has spread widely in Britain and the United States, B.1.1.7., May also be a significant factor.
