Former President Trump is calling for the imprisonment of the journalists who published a leaked draft opinion that showed the Supreme Court was on the verge of overturning Roe v. Wade.
Last spring, Politico reporters Josh Gerstein and Alexander Ward published a blockbuster report on a draft opinion by Judge Samuel Alito that would overturn the landmark abortion ruling.
The court released a report on Thursday detailing an investigation into the leak of the advice, indicating that it was unable to identify the source of the leak to Politico.
“They’ll never find out, and it’s important that they do,” Trump said wrote in a message on his Truth Social website. “So, go to the reporter and ask him/her who it was. If the answer is not given, put the person in jail until the answer is given. You could add the editor and publisher to the list.’
In the days following Politico’s report, congressional Republicans and conservative media figures expressed outrage that the advice was leaked before the court made its official decision on the case and demanded that the person responsible for the leak be found and punished.
Trump previously suggested that the Supreme Court “go to the reporter” who published the draft memo to try to find the source of the leak.
The Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe last June with its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
