World number one badminton Viktor Axelsen secured a place in the Indonesia Open final on Saturday after knocking down rising Malaysian star Lee Zii Jia in a close and fast-paced encounter in Jakarta. Both players started the game strong in front of a nearly full Istora Senayan arena, but Lee edged his opponent in the opener with an aggressive volley of quick shots. Axelsen bounced back to claim second place before the decider fell to the wire as Lee kept the pressure on the Tokyo gold medalist until the very last point.

The top-ranked Dane eventually took the win 19-21, 21-11, 23-21, later calling the match “difficult”.

“To be honest, it was really hard to control (the game) today. However, I’m really proud to have come back (in the second and third sets),” Axelsen told reporters after his win.

In women’s singles, world number two Tai Tzu-ying advanced to the final after a thrilling match against Chinese fourth seed Chen Yufei.

The Taiwanese star stumbled early to lose the opener by a wide margin but managed to pull himself together and win the game 10-21 26-24 21-12.


In the final, Tai will meet unranked Chinese player Wang Zhiyi who eliminated fellow countryman He Bingjiao 21-15, 21-10 in the semi-finals.
