Watch: Chinese missile debris lights up night sky, videos go viral

Thousands of people in East and Southeast Asia witnessed the alluring show in the night sky.

New Delhi:

Many people took to social media on Saturday to share videos of meteor showers. The videos show stunning shades of red, blue and yellow flashing across the night sky as onlookers pull out cameras to capture the moment.

But in fact, the fireworks burned debris from a Chinese rocket returning Earth’s atmosphere over the Indian Ocean.

USSPACECOM can confirm that the People’s Republic of China (PRC) Long March 5B (CZ-5B) re-entered over the Indian Ocean at approximately 10:45 am MDT on 7/30. Please refer to the PRC for more information on the technical aspects of reentry, such as possible debris dispersion + impact site,” the US Space Command tweeted.

Thousands of people in East and Southeast Asia witnessed the alluring show in the night sky. While many clips shared the belief that it was a meteor shower, astronauts and scientists were quick to dispel it and set things right.

“Looks like that Chinese rocket just burned up over Malaysia. Now wait to hear what big chunks are splashing/banging towards Earth,” tweeted NASA astronaut Chris Hadfield.

China launched the 23-ton March-5B Y3 launch vehicle on July 24, according to the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA).

NASA administrator Bill Nelson took a heavy toll on China for failing to safely handle its rockets re-entering Earth.

“All space countries should follow established best practices and do their part to share this kind of information in advance,” Nelson tweeted, “to enable reliable predictions of the potential risk of debris impact, especially for heavy vehicles such as the Long March 5B. , which carry a significant risk of loss of life and property.”

“This is critical to the responsible use of space and to ensure the safety of people here on Earth,” he added.
