That it will cost you more to buy and own than the RAV4, a car that is definitely more fun to drive, is the nail in the coffin.
However, the RAV4 is not without flaws. Its entertainment system can also be frustrating to use, and like the Honda, it can get loud when pushed hard.
But overall, it feels like a much more refined and better finished package, with a smoother and quieter driving experience, a smarter interior and, of course, the added peace of mind of a longer warranty. . If you’re looking for a five-seater SUV that’s not a diesel, it’s worth a look.
Skoda Karoq 2.0 TDI 190 DSG 4×4 – £ 34,815
This top-of-the-line Karoq boasts an equipment list just as large as one of our two test cars, and priced below both. It’s a great family car too, with a large trunk and rear seats that individually fold, slide and tumble, and plenty of other smart features. It isn’t as efficient or fast as the Toyota, however, nor does it come with such a long warranty.
Ford Kuga 2.5 PHEV 225 Vignale FWD – £ 38,995
The Kuga Hybrid is a plug-in, but it’s a pretty good one – and in that luxurious Vignale trim, it’s almost – if not quite – as well laid out as our two test cars. The trap ? Well, there are two, actually; first of all, you will need to have a place to plug it in for it to work at its best. And it’s also front-wheel drive only, which makes it pretty pricey for what it is.
Citroën C5 Aircross 1.6 Puretech Hybrid 225 Shine Plus FWD – £ 35,850
We haven’t gotten behind the wheel of this plug-in C5 Aircross yet, but we do know that the standard car is one of the most versatile and practical five-seater SUVs on the market. If the hybrid has retained the super comfortable ride of the standard car, it will be a very tempting option – and a relatively inexpensive option, albeit at the cost of four-wheel drive and a few toys.
