“With all due respect to Rahul…” Harbhajan Singh wants this former Indian cricketer to coach T20I side | Cricket news

Harbhajan Singh thinks someone like Ashish Nehra should be a part of Indian T20 coaching as he may know the shortest format better than current head coach Rahul Dravid. Nehra retired in 2017 and coached Gujarat Titans to the title in their IPL debut earlier this year. “In T20 format you can have someone like Ashish Nehra who recently retired. He knows this better than, with all due respect to Rahul, we’ve played together for so many years. He has tremendous knowledge but this is a tricky format .

“Someone who has played the game recently is better suited for the coaching job in T20s. I’m not saying remove Rahul from T20. Ashish and Rahul can work together to build this team for the 2024 World Cup,” Harbhajan told PTI.

England’s T20 World Cup triumph has intensified the debate over split coaching and choosing different players for different formats.

“With such an arrangement, it is also easy for Rahul, who might as well take a break as he did on the New Zealand tour, and Ashish can do the job in his absence,” he said.

When asked about different players for different formats, Habhajan added, “That’s fine. That works for me.” The 42-year-old believes the Indian team’s approach should change whether the current top three – Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli – extend their careers until the 2024 World Cup or not.

“The approach has to change to the T20 format. The first six overs are important. If they don’t, you depend on Hardik or Surya to score 50 out of 20. If they don’t shoot, you end up with an undersized total.

“England changed their approach and they have won two World Cups. T20 should be played like T20, not like ODIs,” said the 103 Tests veteran.

In the absence of seniors, India fielded a younger top three in New Zealand.

“All the top three (Rohit, Virat, KL) have to do is increase their attack speed. It’s hard when you hit 110 or 120 and try to hit 180. They need to score at least 9 runs per over in the first 10-12 overs.”

Does he see Kohli and Rohit continue playing the shortest format?

“I’m not one to say whether they want to play or not. They are quality players if they can keep fit, why not, if the approach is different. Players cannot be changed overnight, the approach has to change” , he said. the former India player.

Harbhajan added that Hardik Pandya should lead India in T20s after Rohit Sharma.

“When it happens, Hardik is the right option.”

Speaking about the Abu Dhabi T10 competition, Harbhajan said he is delighted to be a part of the competition.

“I’m very excited. I don’t know how many games I’ll be playing. It’s a good format and shorter format compared to T20s. It’s a faster format and good for the fans. In the future, it could become something really big.”
